Just like on land or in the air, you have to identify whether a Pokemon that you are going to encounter in the water is Friendly or not. These Pokemon are timid and may even follow you around, which also make them the easiest to capture.

If these Friendly Water Pokemon manage to escape your PokeBall, then they will attempt to flee. In the time before they can escape, you can try to hit them with another PokeBall in an attempt to capture them, but this will be noticeably tougher than if they were not alerted.

Contrary to Friendly Pokemon are Hostile Pokemon. These Pokemon turn aggressive when you come close to them in the water, which will give your screen a red warning sign.

When Hostile Water Pokemon turn aggressive, you cannot capture them. You will either have to escape and hide until they’ve calmed down and catch them from afar, or engage in battle and capture them after they’re weakened.

Water Pokemon in general are trickier to capture than Land or Airborne Pokemon. They’re quick and will traverse through the waters quickly, so you have to practice getting good at tracking them down while keeping the right distance, and aiming well too.

As for PokeBalls, the usual Great or Ultra Balls will do the trick. Buying a large stock of them so you don’t fail catching an essential Pokemon is probably necessary.
