Elden Ring

Who is Godwyn the Golden in Elden Ring on Steam Deck

Elden Ring, just like other games developed by From Software such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne, sports a very unique storytelling approach. Instead of featuring multiple cutscenes like other modern action role-playing games that explain what is going on, the games by From Software leave players on their own to piece the story together from item descriptions and other environmental elements, making for a very unique experience.

This unique narrative approach, however, does not mean that Elden Ring doesn’t feature central characters whose actions have shaped The Lands Between’s current situation. Among these is Godwyn the Golden, and here’s everything you need to know about him.

Who is Godwyn the Golden in Elden Ring on Steam Deck

Godwyn the Golden is among the most important characters in the Elden Ring’s lore, and one whose death has had an immense impact on The Lands Between and the end of the Golden Order safeguarded by Queen Marika.

Godwyn the Golden was the first son of Queen Marika the Eternal and her consort Godfrey, the first Elden Lord. A fierce warrior, he managed to lead the forces of the Erdtree to victory against the dragons, earning their friendship as well.

Even legendary warriors fall, however, and Godwyn the Golden was the first Demigod to fall during the Night of the Black Knives. This event started with Lunar Princess Ranni seeking to break free from the Greater Will, thus stealing the rune of death and imbuing her Numen assassin’s weapons with it. This resulted in Godwyn not only dying and having his soul destroyed, but also getting cursed and becoming the first of Those Who Live in Death, undead whose spirits do not return to the Erdtree.

Due to her grief over losing her son, Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring, ending the Golden Order, and causing The Lands Between to fall into chaos. Will this once prosperous kingdom return to its previous splendor? That will depend entirely on you, Tarnished.
