In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you’ll encounter Pokémon roaming around the open world. Since the battles take place right on the spot now, you can initiate battles by simply tossing a Poké Ball at your target. However, if you’re careful, you can sneak up on Pokémon and get a free move in combat. Today, we’ll show you how to crouch and sneak in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet!
Crouching and Sneaking in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Crouching down is easy! Simply press the B button and your Trainer will crouch down. You’ll move slower than usual, but crouching reduces your visibility and dampens the sound from your footsteps.
The main use of crouching is to sneak up on wild Pokémon and catch them off guard. Tossing a Poké Ball at a wild Pokémon’s rear will result in an ambush, which renders the wild Pokémon unable to act for the first turn of the battle. This means that you essentially you get a free turn!

The best way to sneak up on a wild Pokémon is to crouch, then slowly tilt the stick towards them. The slower you move, the quieter you’ll be, and it reduces the chance of wild Pokémon detecting you nearby.
To improve your stealthiness, you can utilize tall grass to hide in. Crouching in tall grass will make the screen gain a vignette effect, where the borders of your screen will darken to signify you’re well-hidden.
Stay crouched in tall grass, wait for a wild Pokémon to wander nearby, lock on with the ZL button, then aim for the Pokémon’s behind. You’ll know you landed an ambush hit when the effect looks a little shinier than usual.
