The world of Terraria is a beautiful yet hostile place, full of danger and mystery. To help you on your journey are a set of friendly NPCs, or non-player characters. These NPCs will move into houses you build, offering you helpful services and goods. Today, we’re here to answer the question: How many NPCs are in Terraria?

All NPCs in Terraria

As of the current patch 1.4.4.9, there is a grand total of 26 traditional NPCs in the game. We’ll sort them by when you can get them to move into your town.

Normal NPCs

These NPCs can be found and invited to move in before you defeat Wall of Flesh. There is a total of 18 normal NPCs.

  • Guide: Moves in at the beginning of the game.
  • Merchant: Moves in after you have at least 50 silver.
  • Nurse: Moves in after any player has more than 100 max health.
  • Demolitionist: Moves in after you pick up any type of explosive.
  • Dye Trader: Moves in after you pick up any type of dye item or material.
  • Angler: Moves in after you talk to him at any Ocean biome.
  • Zoologist: Moves in after you’ve filled in 10% of the Bestiary.
  • Dryad: Moves in after you’ve defeated the first major boss in your world, usually Eye of Cthulhu.
  • Painter: Moves in when at least eight other NPCs have moved in.
  • Golfer: Moves in after you rescue him from the Undeground Desert.
  • Arms Dealer: Moves in after you pick up a bullet or gun item.
  • Tavernkeep: Moves in after rescued from the Caverns. Randomly spawns after you’ve defeated Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu.
  • Stylist: Moves in after rescued from a Spider Cave.
  • Goblin Tinkerer: Moves in after rescued from the Caverns. Randomly spawns after you’ve conquered a Goblin Invasion.
  • Witch Doctor: Moves in after defeating the Queen Bee.
  • Clothier: Moves in after defeating Skeletron.
  • Mechanic: Moves in after rescued from the Dungeon.
  • Party Girl: Moves in at a random time after at least 14 other NPCs have moved in.

Hardmode NPCs

These NPCs can only move in once you’ve defeated Wall of Flesh and your world has entered Hardmode. There are 8 Hardmode NPCs.

  • Wizard: Moves in after rescued from the Caverns.
  • Tax Collector: Moves in after being rescued from the Underworld. Use Purification Powder on a Tortured Soul.
  • Truffle: Moves in if there is a house available inside a surface-level Glowing Mushroom biome.
  • Pirate: Moves in after you conquer a Pirate Invasion.
  • Steampunker: Moves in after you defeat a mechanical boss.
  • Cyborg: Moves in after you defeat Plantera.
  • Santa Claus: Moves in during Christmas season, and after the Frost Legion has been conquered.
  • Princess: Moves in after all other NPCs have moved in. Pets and Santa Claus do not count.

Miscellaneous NPCs

These are other types of NPCs that aren’t counted towards normal NPC calculations, but they do help with Pylon requirements. The first up are pets, which are acquired by buying the corresponding license from the Zoologist.

  • Town Cat: Unlocked by default.
  • Town Dog: Unlocks after you’ve completed 25% of the Bestiary.
  • Town Bunny: Unlocks after you’ve completed 45% of the Bestiary.

Next up are the Town Slimes, which are basically friendly Slimes.

  • Nerdy Slime: Moves in after defeating King Slime.
  • Elder Slime: Moves in after opening the Old Shaking Chest found in Underground Biomes. You’ll need a Golden Key to unlock it.
  • Squire Slime: Moves in after throwing a Copper Helmet/Copper Shortsword on a regular, blue Slime.
  • Clumsy Slime: Moves in after popping a Windy Balloon floating around in the sky.
  • Surly Slime: Moves in after fishing during a Blood Moon.
  • Cool Slime: Moves in randomly whenever a random party is thrown.
  • Mystic Slime: Moves in after using Purification Powder on a Mystic Frog in the Jungle.
  • Diva Slime: Moves in after throwing a Sparkle Slime Balloon into a pool of Shimmer.
