Installing MultiMania Co-Op Mod in Sonic Mania

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Unfortunately, CodenameGamma, the developer behind the 4-player co-op mod, has disabled mod downloads. We don’t know if it’ll ever be brought back, but in the meantime you can use another mod called MultiMania for online co-op. The only downside to this is that it seems to be limited to two players. Sorry for the inconvenience!

To make this process as simple as possible, we’ll be using Mania Mod Loader, a popular tool for easily installing Sonic Mania mods. You can download Mania Mod Loader from the official GameBanana page.

Download the Mania Mod Loader, then use your favorite zipping app like 7zip to unzip it to the same directory as your Sonic Mania installation.

Once you’ve extracted the contents, you’ll find a file named ManiaModManager.exe, so open it. If you are prompted to update any files, do so.

Next, let’s download the MultiMania mod from GameBanana. Do the manual download, as the 1-click installer seems to not be working at the moment.

Once it’s downloaded, open it, and you should see a folder titled MultiMania. Extract this folder to the mods folder inside your Sonic Mania directory.

Now, switch back to the Mania Mod Manager app. Click the refresh button, and you should now see MultiMania appear in the mods list. Click on the checkbox to enable it, then at the bottom click on Install loader.

Everything should be set. Now, click on the Save & Play button in the Mania Mod Manager. This will launch Sonic Mania will all your checked mods enabled.

In Sonic Mania, press any button on the title screen to get to the main menu. Hit the ESC key on your keyboard to bring up the developer menu, then navigate down to Host Game.

This will prompt you with a connection code in a green box. Copy this code and send it to your friend, who then must input the connection code in the dev menu, then hit Connect. If all works well, you will be connected with your partner, and you can play through Mania Mode together.

An example connection code.

Do note that MultiMania is not bug free, and you will encounter a lot of strange bugs. MultiMania’s last update was four years ago, so it’s highly unlikely it will be updated any further.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to bother with mods, you can simply use local play sharing services like Steam Remote Play or Parsec.

As a side note, Sonic Mania Plus’ Competition Mode natively supports 4 player local play, so if you just want to race your friends in various courses, you don’t need a mod for that.

That concludes our guide on how to install Sonic Mania 4 player co-op mod. If you have any other questions or tips on the installation process, let us know in the comments below!
