When Should you Promote Alear in Fire Emblem Engage?

Upon reaching level 10, a unit can change their class to an advanced class. The process requires a Master Seal, which can be obtained at multiple points throughout the main story.

The advanced classes that your units can promote to depend on the unit’s proficiencies. For example, the Swordmaster advanced class required a unit to have S-level proficiency in swords.

This means that your units can effectively switch to any class you want them to be, provided you spend the time training them up in the appropriate areas.

For Alear, they have an advanced class that is unique to them: The Divine Dragon class. This advanced class is a direct upgrade to their base class, Dragon Child. Their base stats are increased across the board, and they gain A-level sword and B-level art proficiency.

You should promote Alear as soon as they hit level 10. The reason for this is that advanced classes do not have reduced experience gain, but they do provide significantly better stat growth rates.

You can change classes through the Inventory menu while on the Somniel.

In fact, the game practically encourages you to promote your units as soon as they’re able, because the enemies get progressively stronger with each chapter. You need those better growth rates to keep up with the enemies.

If you’re wondering, every unit in the game has a hidden “internal level”. Basically, the game keeps track of every level earned by that unit across all their classes they’ve ever taken, and this determines how much experience they gain during combat; higher internal levels means slower experience gain.

Since essentially most of the units you recruit throughout the course of the game have low internals levels when you get them, save for Vander, this means you can promote them as soon as possible and reap all the benefits.
