Niantic Is Actually Working on Augmented Reality Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Mobile Game

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

It was a while ago when a crazy rumor surfaced: the Niantic, the company behind the insanely popular Pokemon GO is working on a similar game, but this time set in the magical world of Harry Potter. The rumor was considered to be nothing more than wishful thinking, so everybody moved on with their lives eventually.

But it seems, in the end, that it wasn’t really a rumor as Niantic today announced that they’re working together with Warner Bros on developing Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, an AR (Augmented Reality) game for mobile, to be launched sometime in 2018.

Although there’s not a ton in terms of information about the game, we pretty much know what to expect and all I can say is that we’re certainly up for some pleasant surprises. But if it’s the regular PR words you’re looking for, we’re told that the game will use state-of-the-art augmented reality mobile technology to put magic in the hands of aspiring wizards and witches worldwide.

It seems that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be a bit more like Niantic’s Ingress rather than Pokemon GO: players will get to explore real life neighborhoods and go on “adventures” according to the developers, learn and cast spells, discover mysterious artifacts, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters.

In Ingress, players fight for capturing various important landmarks in the city and most likely the upcoming Harry Potter mobile game will follow a similar concept, with some serious upgrades and new features.

This is everything that we have officially so far, with further details being expected to hit us in 2018 – the same year when we anticipate the game to go live worldwide after a potential soft launch in a couple of countries, as is the norm nowadays.

We can speculate though that we’ll get the chance to be part of one of the well known houses in the franchise, which further means that most players will go Gryffindor, while the rest will choose Slytherin. This could have an effect over the gameplay, as well as bring different storylines into play. Of course, this is just speculation and things that are most likely to happen.

But we have to wait a little bit until we know for sure. What matters right now is that the game is indeed real and we’ll soon have a new revolution: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is coming to mobile and I believe it will be even bigger than Pokemon Go!

Until that happens, keep an eye on the game’s official website, as well as our website for more details, screenshots and upcoming guides for the game.
