Super Dungeon Maker dungeon guide

Making your 2D pixel dungeon is as simple or as complicated as you would like it to be. The goal of each dungeon is for the adventurer to reach the final room and find the Golden Egg. It is important to remember that the Golden Egg can only be placed in a 1st floor room so keep that in mind as you are designing multi-level dungeon experiences.

To begin your own dungeon, first visit the Hen & Fam and click Create New. You start with one small room on the 1st floor containing your Golden Egg. Ignore the egg for now but remember to move it to the final room when you have finished building and decorating your levels. On the left of the screen are your options for dungeon content including rooms, doors, traps, enemies, and decor.

Use the Floor Tool to create a new room or to make the starter room bigger. Select the tool and draw wherever you want the room to be, any shape and size you like. If you are not sure what type of item or floor you have selected, hover over the icon and the description will appear. If you have placed a wall or other item and decide you do not want it anymore, you can use the Eraser Tool to delete it.

Select a Door to connect rooms. These doors can be simple walkways or can be locked, in which case the adventurer will need you to place or hide a Key somewhere in the room. Keys can be hidden under Bushes or inside Chests. If you want to make it trickier to get at, Traps or Enemies can be placed nearby. Doors can also include stairs that lead to another level.

This means you can create intricate dungeons of twisty corridors and secret rooms if you want to, with paths and stairs leading from one floor to the next. There are seven floors to play around with, from Basement 3 all the way up to the 4th Floor.

As mentioned before you can make each room tricky to get through by using traps or enemies to block the exit. Use Triggers and Spawners to make things appear in the order you want them. For instance, you could place a first wave of enemies in a room with a Trigger at the entrance, meaning the enemies appear as soon as the adventurer enters.

Another wave of enemies can then be placed with a Spawner set to 2 so that they appear when the first group are killed. An item can also be placed with a numbered Spawner to make sure a Key or Chest (or whatever item you desire) appears when you want it, with up to nine total queued spawns available.

Spawning and Triggers are super fun to use when creating a Boss-level room. You can design it so the adventurer has to defeat waves of enemy minions while battling stages of a boss fight, just like other dungeon adventure games. Just add the enemies and place a numbered Spawner according to when you want them to appear!

Decoration is entirely up to personal taste but your dungeon would look bare without a flaming torch or five. Just like enemies and chests, the decor can also be triggered to appear at certain points if you want to surprise an adventurer. There are three different styles to choose from, each giving different vibes and slightly different coloring to the scene.

Puzzle rooms can be simple but effective too. Create a block puzzle by placing a mixture of immovable and moveable blocks in the adventurer’s way so that they have to figure out which blocks have to be pushed out of the way to get through to the exit.

If you are adding Water to one or more of your rooms, and the adventurer will have to cross it to get to the next door, do not forget to give them Flippers to find and use! If they don’t have flippers, they will not be able to get across because, of course, chickens don’t swim. These small details are easy to figure out and fix when you play through your dungeon as you design it.

The controls for Super Dungeon Maker are very intuitive and don’t take long to learn, and players soon get to know what each of the tools and items are on the left side of the screen. The best tip is that the greatest dungeons are the ones where the designer has tested it thoroughly before sharing it with the community. Remember: your dungeon does not have to be overly complicated or dangerous for the adventurer but it does have to be a fun and achievable challenge!
