In Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, also known as one of the best RPGs ever, using the camera is your way of identifying things that you encounter in the great outdoors. You can also be like us and use it to pretend you’re a vlogger, we won’t judge. Either way, let’s learn how to use the camera.
The camera is just one of many runes you’ll use in the game, special artifacts that give you powers such as portable bombs, the ability to freeze things, etc. With the camera, you’ll mostly use it to take photos of things people from side quests ask for and collect information for the Hyrule compendium.
It was one of Princess Zelda’s favorite hobbies, so please do it in her honor. The poor girl has been holding off a monster for you for 100 years, the least you can do is get her some photos!

How to Get the Camera in Zelda Breath of the Wild
You’ll get the camera fairly early on in the game. After you finish the tutorial on the island and make your way to Kakariko Village, Impa will send you to Hateno Village to the Ancient Tech Lab. Getting there from Kakariko is a little bit of a hike, but it’s not too bad.
Go through the village that’s rightmost, the one where Nanna is standing near a fire. Keep following the path and cross the Kakariko Bridge. Now instead of taking the path straight, you need to make a left. You’ll see the signs pointing to where the two towns are.
Keep following the path to pass through Fort Hateno. Be warned, you’re likely going to run into some bokoblins, so have a weapon and some health items ready. There’s a ton of dead guardians at the Fort along with some stray live ones. At this stage, don’t even bother battling them, just run.
Run far far far away because the early game weapons won’t harm a hair on their head. Keep on following the path straight, don’t make any turns, and you will eventually get to town. The lab is all the way at the back of the village on a hill.
There you’ll meet the employees Purah and Symin. Purah will send you on a quest to light the furnace outside with blue flame. What you need to do is light a torch with the blue flame that’s on the outskirts and carry it all the way up to the furnace. Once you do this, Purah will give the camera rune. Press the minus button on the left joycon and then L to access all of your runes.
How to Take Pictures & Play With the Camera in Zelda Breath of the Wild
Using the camera is very cut and dry. To zoom in on things, toggle the buttons on the left joycon. Want to take selfies? Press X. Hit it again when you want to go back to landscape mode. For snapping photos in all modes, press A. You can travel around with the camera point of view up, so feel free to occasionally pretend you’re in a first-person survival game.
Now that you got a camera rune lesson, you’ll be the master photographer of Hyrule in no time! Snap lots of fun memories on your adventures today in Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild!
