Monsters with Attitude Review (Android, iOS)

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Monsters with Attitude is a new mobile game that takes the IO gameplay model and boosts it by a few levels. It’s like your favorite IO game on steroids. Like Godzilla vs. Gigan meets Monsters Inc and have a baby with some Katamari Damacy genes as well. As you can imagine, the result is a pretty unique and mighty impressive game.

The concept is simple: you’re a monster that has to wreak havoc on an otherwise beautiful planet, causing as much destruction as possible to get bigger and meaner. You’re also competing against other monsters – either AI-controlled or real players – which makes everything even more impressive.

In true IO fashion, you can dash and hit the monsters around you in order to transfer some of their energy your way, but you’ll only be successful if they’re smaller than yours. Bigger is better here – but you can still make a comeback if you haven’t had your 5 A Day: trees, rocks, cars, buildings and mega-structures.

You can launch your comeback (or establish your dominance even more) by getting and using the various boosts that are randomly scattered over the map. From not so impressive speed boosters, to balloons that pump you up a bit, to all sorts of bombs and explosive devices, you have great variety in terms of boosts and tons of options to stay entertained at the expense of your opponents’ well being.

But this is all pretty much modern day IO gaming, right? But I said that Monsters with Attitude takes everything to a whole new level, haven’t I?

Well, I did, and I won’t take it back. Flaregames’ title also injects a bit of RPG into the mix, increasing both the fun and lifespan of their game.

Not only that you have to climb up the leagues and unlock new monsters that you can play as with a gacha system of boxes that you can unlock after a specific amount of time passes, but you can also upgrade those monsters to be bigger, better and meaner.

Each monster has their own unique power that can be activated during the games, but also other skills that can be boosted using cards and money. This takes everything to a brand new level, increasing both the complexity and fun factor of the game.

And it’s one of the features that I am sure we’ll see more and more in such games, because they simply make more sense and are better this way.

Another advantage that Monster with Attitude has over your regular IO game is the fact that it looks absolutely amazing. From the monsters themselves to the planets where the action takes place, everything has been designed with attention to details.

Colors, shapes, animations… everything looks great and put you in a mood that I never thought games of this type were capable of instilling.

Since it’s a free to play game, Monsters with Attitude also comes packed with a bunch of IAPs. Fortunately, these are not stuffed down your throat by force, meaning that the game is not Pay to Win. Sure, those who decide to pay have bigger chances to win as they will get cards and upgrade faster than those who don’t, but there’s nothing that a bit of work can’t achieve.

Overall, there is a large amount of free goodies offered and the timers for unlocking the crates are standard (3, 6 and 9 hours… maybe more for rarer boxes that I haven’t found yet) and so far I am extremely satisfied with how I can perform in the game, even though I spent no money on it.

Another important element of the game is the multiplayer aspect: in most recent IO games, you’re playing against bots. This does make it easier for you to win, but nothing compares with testing your skills against real players. And that’s what you’re getting in Monsters with Attitude, taking everything to a whole new level.

All in all, I can say that I am extremely pleased with the experience offered by this game. I love it and I can’t have enough of it! So I’ll do just that: go play it some more and hopefully you’ll do the same. You won’t regret it.

Monsters with Attitude can be downloaded on Google Play or the App Store.
