Minecraft Pocket Edition: How to Go to the Nether

Minecraft is a beautiful world to explore, but in another dimension lies something a little more fiendish. The Nether is a realm full of precious treasures, but they’re guarded by some of the toughest foes Minecraft has to offer. Today, we’ll show you how to craft your own Nether Portal in our Minecraft Pocket Edition guide on how to go to the Nether!

Preparing the Nether Portal Materials

The Nether can be a very scary place, especially if you’re unprepared, so it’s best to make sure your gear is up-to-date! We recommend a full set of iron armor at the very least, but diamond is the safer bet. You never know what to expect in the Nether, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

To enter the Nether, you’ll need to construct the Nether Portal first. You’ll need a diamond pickaxe, so if you haven’t dug deep into the caves yet, now is the time to do so. Once you have a diamond pickaxe, it’s time to look for some lava. Lava naturally occurs in the overworld at the same levels as diamond, so be sure to keep an eye out for lava pools.

Once you find some lava, bring a bucket of water and pour the water over the lava. Make sure the lava is standing lava and not flowing, otherwise this will not work. If everything goes right, the lava will solidify into obsidian, a dark purple block. Mine it with your diamond pickaxe. You’ll need at least ten blocks of obsidian.

How to Build the Nether Portal

Once you have at least ten blocks of obsidian, you’ll also need flint and steel, which can be crafted from a flint and iron ingot. You have everything you need – now it’s time to construct the portal!

There are two ways to build the Nether Portal. For the minimal method, place two blocks of obsidian next to each other, then put down any other filler block on the ends of both obsidian blocks. Then place three obsidian blocks going up on both sides, then finally two more on the top to round it off. If you want a cleaner look, you can fill in the corners with actual obsidian.

Now that the portal’s frame is constructed, there’s only one thing left to do: ignite the portal! On the inside of the portal frame, use your flint and steel to light a fire, and the portal should magically activate. The way to the Nether is open now!
