How to Get Green Dye in Minecraft

Minecraft has 16 dyes to discover and craft, 7 of which are primary colour dyes that are created using only items that spawn naturally in the world. Green dye is one of those Primary Colour Dyes.

Green Dye is used for a multitude of colouring needs:

  • Wool (by applying dye to sheep and then shearing off the coloured wool)
  • Terracotta
  • Mobs
  • Tamed Animal Collars
  • Leather Armour
  • Beds
  • Glass
  • Banners
  • Glowsticks
  • Concrete Powder (by combining with sand or gravel)
  • Candles
  • Fireworks (by applying dye to gunpowder)
  • Carpet
  • Beds
  • Water for cauldrons
  • Balloons

To craft a green dye players must first find a Cactus which can be found growing naturally in dry areas- such as the Deserts and the Badlands. They can also be bought from some Wadering Traders for 3 Emeralds.

Smelting in the furnace interface

The cactus is placed in the furnace interface with any fuel (coal, planks, charcoal, etc) and smelted to create the Green Dye. Smelting is pretty simple, and gives the player experience.

The Green Dye can then be used as needed, or combined with other materials and colour dyes to create more colours such as Cyan, and Lime.
