The passive mobs of Villagers in Minecraft inhabit villages where they interact with each other, work at designated jobs, and breed with one another. All adult living creatures can breed in Minecraft as long as they are the same species, and you can encourage adult Villagers to breed as long as they are “willing.”
Breeding Villagers
To encourage Villagers to breed, you need to make sure that they have enough unclaimed beds in the Village, as well as enough food in their inventory. Unlike animals in Minecraft, Villagers do not breed automatically when given food. Villagers need to know that there is enough room in the Village for their growing family.
Villagers are most likely to breed when they are “willing.” To increase the likeliness of a Villager becoming “willing” to breed, you can either trade with them, or you can fill their inventory with the following food:
- 3 Bread
- 12 Carrots
- 12 Potatoes
- 12 Beetroots

Once you’ve fed all of the items to each Villager you are encouraging to breed, leave them in a room together, and 20 minutes later they should have produced a Baby Villager.
Remember: you must have enough unclaimed beds for all Villagers and the Baby Villagers. These beds must have a 2 block clearance above them as Baby Villagers love to bounce on them! After 20 minutes, those Baby Villagers become adults and can be assigned jobs.
