Altaria is the dual-type Dragon and Flying evolved form of Swablu, the little cloud bird Pokémon. With some decent all-around stats and good movesets, Altaria can prove to be quite the obstacle if you’re not prepared. Today, we’ll show you all Altaria weaknesses and counters in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
How to Counter Altaria in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Swablu evolves into Altaria at level 35. Altaria is a Dragon and Flying dual-type Pokémon, which means it has the following weaknesses and resistances:
- Weaknesses: Ice (4x), Dragon, Fairy, Rock
- Resistances: Grass (1/4), Fighting, Bug, Fire, Water
- Immunities: Ground
- Normal Effectiveness: Normal, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Steel, Electric, Psychic, Dark
Altaria’s main weakness is Ice-type moves. Both Flying and Dragon-type Pokémon are weak to Ice moves, so since Altaria is both of those types, it takes quadruple damage from Ice moves!
Conversely, since both Dragon and Flying are resistance to Grass-type moves, Altaria takes only 1/4 damage from Grass moves, instead of the usual 1/2 resistant damage. Avoid using Grass-type Pokémon!

Needless to say, your main priority when fighting Altaria is to ensure that your selected Pokémon knows an Ice-move or two. If you use an actual Ice-type Pokémon, that will help too, as they will benefit from STAB (Same type attack bonus).
Altaria’s base Def stat is slightly lower than its Sp. Def stat, so try to hit it with physical moves if you can. It’s not the end of the world if you have to use special moves, though.
Here are some Pokémon you can find in the Paldea region that are great counters to Altaria:
- Eiscue (Ice – Violet Exclusive)
- Cubchoo/Beartic (Ice)
- Bergmite/Avalugg (Ice)
- Cetoddle/Cetitan (Ice)
- Glaceon (Ice)
- Cryogonal (Ice)
- Snorunt/Glalie/Froslass (Ice/Ghost)
- Iron Bundle (Ice/Water – Violet Exclusive)
- Shellder/Cloyster (Ice/Water)
- Sneasel/Weavile (Ice/Dark)
- Snom/Frosmoth (Ice/Bug)
- Snover (Ice/Grass)
- Delibird (Ice/Flying)
- Frigibax/Arctibax/Baxcalibur (Ice/Dragon)
Use any of these Pokémon, or really any Ice-type in general, and you should be able to take down Altaria with a single Ice-type move. This is assuming your Pokémon are close in level to the Altaria you’re fighting, of course.
