Best Ways To Grind Levels in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – XP Farming Guide

Modern Pokémon games have less linear mechanics to level up, so here is all you need to know to grind levels in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Leveling your Pokémon is one of the most important things you can do in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It allows them to learn new moves, get stronger stats, and most importantly evolve into better forms.

In the early days of Pokémon, leveling was a straightforward process that you simply did by playing through the game, moving from town to town and gym to gym. However, as the games move away from their linear format, so does that system. There are new mechanics that allow you to quickly raise Pokémon so that you can have units beyond your starting 6, and understanding how to use them is very important for success in the games.

These are the best ways to grind levels in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in each stage.

Altaria and Swablu from Pokemon

When starting out, the best way to level quickly in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is to use the auto mechanic: press the R button and your lead Pokémon will come out and attack the wild Pokémon. But be careful with this, because if your lead isn’t strong enough to fight the wild unit or has a type weakness, they will run back to you.

Something important to know about this system is that it only works with low level Pokémon. The stronger a unit is, the slower it will level with the auto system, even if the wild Pokémon it is fighting is within its level range.

How To Level Up In The Late Game Areas of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

As you get deeper into the game, the ideal way to get stronger quickly is to participate in Raids. They are the crystal formations throughout the map that have light shining out of them. You can determine the difficulty of a Raid by how many stars the Pokémon has: the more stars, the more challenging a Raid fight will be.

When it comes to Raids, the enemy will evolve into its Tera type, which is different from their regular type. Before you go into battle, you want to look at the icon that’s the upper right corner of the Pokémon’s outline. This will tell you what is the Tera type of the Pokémon, and you want to choose your unit based on the Tera type, not their regular type.

How To Get Exp. Candies in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

When you win Raid battles, you’ll be rewarded with something called Exp. Candy. This is not the same thing as a Rare Candy, which allows you to move up one level; Exp. Candy moves up your experience points bar. Depending on the size of the Exp. Candy and the level of your Pokémon, one can boost them up several levels at once. Candy can range in size from Small to Extra Large, and stronger Raids will give out stronger Candy.

With these tips, leveling your Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet should be easy and straightforward. For advice on the strongest species to level and other Pokémon Scarlet and Violet guides, check out our section dedicated to the game.
