One of the burning questions for fans of the Harry Potter universe is whether players will be able to use the Unforgivable Curses. In this article, we bring you definitive answers to the question: can you use the Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy?

What Are Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy?

Every person who has read Harry Potter books or watched any of the later movies knows about the Unforgivable Curses. There are three of them—the Cruciatus Curse, the Imperius Curse, and the Killing Curse—, and using any of these on another human being is supposed to grant you a lifetime in Azkaban, the wizard jail.

The Cruciatus Curse (Crucio) is used for inflicting unbearable pain and torturing others, while casting Imperio (the Imperius Curse) gives you control over another human. Avada Kedavra (the Killing Curse) is the worst and strongest of the three, as it instantly kills its target in a flash of green light.

While these curses in the Harry Potter lore are a big no-no, it is not difficult to see how practical they would be in a role-playing game set in this universe.

Will You Be Able to Use the Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy?

Even though this topic can lead to in-depth morality discussions, the short answer is—yes, you will be able to use the Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy. This reveal goes hand in hand with the game’s promise of moral ambiguity, allowing players to go down the Dark Arts path if they choose to.

Developers confirmed that you will get to decide whether you want to be a hero or live long enough to become a villain, and one of the gameplay showcases explicitly demonstrates the Unforgivable Curses in action.

In all honesty, we do know for sure that these curses will be available for use in the Dark Arts Battle Arena, a special feature included in the Digital Deluxe edition of the game that leans heavily into the sinister side of magic. However, how they will appear in the main story remains yet to be seen.

While the end of the 19th century, when the game is set, was not big on human or wizarding rights, using the Unforgivable Curses had already been outlawed by then. Even though we know that you will be able to finish the main quest line as a baddy depending on your choices, it seems unlikely that players will get to scream “Avada Kedavra” at other students just like that, running around Hogwarts corridors.
