Among the mechanics that have always defined the Shin Megami Tensei series alongside the ability to get demons to join your cause are the moon phase mechanics. These mechanics, which influence a lot of other things like combat and demon negotiation, make a comeback in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster, and they influence even more than before, as some demons can only be fused with the right moon phase.
Here’s everything you need to know about the moon phase mechanics in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster.
How Does Kagustuchi Work in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster
In the world of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster, Kagutsuchi is among the most important elements, as it regulates the dangerous Vortex World. Some even worship it as a god.
Kagutsuchi isn’t just a simple story element in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster, but a gameplay mechanic in its own right. The Kagutsuchi is like the moon and so comes with a lunar cycle that starts from New and ends with Full. Depending on the phase, some demons will behave differently.
Generally, demons are more docile during the New phase: they do not fight too hard and will often engage in conversation themselves, making it easier to recruit them. On the other hand, some demons will be particularly excitable during the Full phase, meaning that they will be more powerful and will refuse to listen to you if you try to engage in conversation. Select skills will also be more powerful depending on the phase of Kagutsuchi, so it is possible to use these mechanics to gain a sound advantage during boss battles.
Kagutsuchi also influences Demon Fusion, although the changes are not as big as in other areas. Sacrificial Fusion can only be used during the Full phase, and Deathstone Fusions can only be performed during certain Kagutsuchi phases.
The phase of Kagutsuchi also influences the type of loot you can find in the Mystical Chests scattered all over. Check out our dedicated guide to learn more about how to get the best items from these special chests.
