In Stardew Valley, farmers can take up all sorts of professions to earn gold. They can farm, raise animals, forage, and even fish! You start the game with a basic fishing rod that can’t do too much, but eventually you’ll get better rods with more features, like attaching Bait. Today, we’ll show you how to attach Bait to a rod in Stardew Valley on all platforms!
Attaching Bait to a Rod in Stardew Valley
Are the fish just not biting today? Well, we’ve got the perfect solution for you: Bait! When attached to a fishing rod, Bait will attract fish and make them bite faster. To start the process, you’ll need at least level 2 fishing so that you can purchase the Fiberglass Rod from Willy for 1,800 gold. You’ll receive a letter in the mail when the Fiberglass Rod is available for purchase.
Now, you’ll need to make some Bait. You can craft five Bait using one Bug Meat, which is dropped by the fly and larva enemies in the early levels of the Mines. They’re easy to fight, so head down to the Mines if you need to get some Bug Meat.
With the Bait and Fiberglass Rod in hand, it’s time to attach the Bait. To do so, open your inventory and pick up the Bait by pressing your Use Tool button, then highlight your Fiberglass Rod and press the Check/Do Action button to attach it.
These actions are mapped to different buttons depending on what system you’re playing Stardew Valley on. With your inventory open, follow the directions that match your platform:
- PC: Left-click the Bait to pick it up, then right-click your rod to attach it.
- Switch: Select Bait, press the A button to pick it up, then select your rod and press the Y button to attach it.
- Xbox: Select Bait, press the A button to pick it up, then select your rod and press the X button to attach it.
- PlayStation: Select Bait, press the X button to pick it up, then select your rod and press the Square button to attach it.
- Mobile: Drag the Bait onto your rod.

You should hear a sound effect if you did it right, and the Bait should now be in the Fiberglass Rod’s Bait slot. You can take the Bait off by pressing the same button you used to attach it in the first place.
Once you hit fishing level 6, you’ll be able to purchase the Iridium Rod from Willy. In addition to Bait, you can also attach fishing tackles to the Iridium Rod the same way you attach Bait. Each tackle provides a special ability to your fishing skill.
You’re ready to fish! You should notice fish biting more often with Bait attached. That concludes our guide on attaching bait to a fishing rod, so if you have any other Stardew Valley fishing questions, let us know in the comments below!
