How to Easily Beat Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring on Steam Deck

Elden Ring is an open-world action role-playing developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Just like Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls, Sekiro, and the Dark Souls series, Elden Ring was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. The caveat here is that the game was made in collaboration with the award-winning fantasy novelist and source material creator for the highly popular Game of Thrones television show, George R. R. Martin, who provided a lot of source material for the game’s setting.

Elden Ring was released for Microsoft Windows, Steam Deck, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 25, 2022.

The Soulsborne games are known for their difficulty level and Elden Ring is no exception. Nothing highlights the difficulty curve of the game better than the the bosses of the game, and one of the strongest ones is Starscourge Radahn.

Starscourge Radahn

Starscourge Radahn is a massive and destructive boss creature located in Caelid. This is not an optional boss, as players have to defeat it to advance to the Legacy Dungeon.

Things to Remember

It is not advised to summon other players for this fight, as doing so will render players unable to use their horse, which is essential, especially for Magic/Ranged Users. Instead, make use of the Festival Mechanic to summon a plethora of NPCs to assist.

The blue arrows Radahn starts shooting right after players enter his arena can’t be dodged while on horseback. The arrow barrage he fires in the air tends to hone in on players and is very difficult to dodge while on foot.

Beating the Boss

As always, the boss has two phases to watch out for: one at full health and one from 50% health onwards.

First phase

• First things first, hiding is essential. Players can use piles of swords in the Wailing Dunes to hide and protect themselves from the boss’s ranged attacks. Beware of the magic arrows though.
• Summon the horse for maneuvering to and from the boss quickly and stick to horseback while moving towards the boss for high mobility and evasion. Circle around the boss and observe its attack patterns.
• Use ranged builds to attack from a distance. Ranged is also the recommended build for this boss since it also has high mobility.
• Stay on guard when the boss plunges his sword into the ground and it glows purple. This is the timing of the boss’s Gravity Spell that deals massive damage. Apart from this, it is also an indicator for the start of second phase of the fight.

Second Phase

Once Starscourge Radahn is on the ground, the fight will enter its second phase.

• In the second phase, Radahn is going to use some magic attacks as well, like throwing purple orbs. These can be dodged fairly easily.
• The comet attack is possibly the worst one. It deals massive damage if Radahn decides to target the player directly. Use the horse to get out of the way quickly.
• Players should focus on summoning the NPCs so they can distract the boss. Then, when the boss is distracted, players can get close to him and attack him from the back. Keep focusing on chipping away at the boss while he’s distracted and he should go down soon.
