How to Learn all Skills in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox features six different playable characters that learn a variety of combat skills that let them dish out some serious damage to enemies. Most of the skills are learned by simply leveling up but a few more require you to go out of your way to find Grimoires that must then be used to learn the attached skills. As the skills granted by Grimoires are among the most powerful in the game, you will want to learn them as soon as you can, especially if you’re playing at a high difficulty level.

Crimson King

Adol, also known as the Crimson King, learns the following skills by leveling up.

• Rising Slash
• Flare Shot
• Swift Raid
• Demonic Pierce
• Void Blast
• Prisoner’s Grasp
• Abyssal Blade
• Vermillion Scythe

Two more skills, Cardinal Blast and Calamity Combo, are learned via Grimoires. To get the Cardinal Blast Grimoire, you need to turn in all 21 landmarks to Alex near Balduq’s main gates. The Calamity Combo Grimoire is found inside a treasure chest located in the center of the big open area between the two warp points in the Quarry Ruins.

White Cat

White Cat learns the following skills by leveling up.

• Cat Flip
• Claw Snatch
• Felicity Tail
• Heavenly Steps
• Stray Cat
• Wild Scratch
• Cerberian Burst
• Regulus Impact

Rapid Slide and Shooting Star can only be learned by finding two Grimoires. The first can be obtained as a reward from Vanin by turning in all 11 graffiti collectibles. The second is found inside a treasure chest located in the Cloaca Maxima dungeon.

Hawk

Hawk learns the following skills by leveling up.

• Aerial Stinger
• Fractus Knives
• Raptor Raid
• Guilty Blow
• Spiral Gust
• Carnage Lancer
• Deadly Rush
• Tempest Rain

Gale Thrust and Rebellion Crow are learned by finding two Grimoires. The Thrust Grimoire can be found inside a chest located in one of the secret areas in the Blocked Path. The Rebel Grimoire is inside a treasure chest to the west in the Dry Moats’ middle level.

Doll

Doll learns the following skills by leveling up.

• Crescendo
• Foxtrot Blade
• Marionette String
• Spinning Heel
• Calvary Waltz
• Principal Whip
• Illusionary Gavotte
• Coppelia Order

The Onyx Ripper and Mistral Epee skills can only be learned by finding two Grimoires. The Reaping Grimoire can be purchased from the Bookstore in Chapter 7, while the Vortex Grimoire is found inside a treasure chest in the Concealed Path.

Raging Bull

Raging Bull learns the following skills by simply leveling up.

• Rumble Horn
• Bellow
• Stampede
• Titan Drive
• Brave Hurricane
• Maximum Raid
• Buffalo Dash
• Dread Breaker

Two additional skills, Sledge Wave and Grand Slam, can be learned by finding two Grimoires. The first one, Bash Grimoire, can be found in the Cultural Heritage area of Balduq and requires the Shadow Dive gift which is learned when Renegade joins your party. The second, the Sturdy Grimoire, is found inside in a chest located inside the Groaning Grotto.

Renegade

Renegade learns these skills by leveling up.

The two final skills, Dusk Drop and Malefic Judgement are learned by finding two Grimoires. The first one, Dark Grimoire, is located in a chest found in the eastern area of the Woodlands of Woe. The second Grimoire, Wicked Grimoire, is found inside a treasure chest in a room to the south of the bridge in the Emain Macha dungeon.
