Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a role-playing video game developed and published by Jam City under license from Portkey Games. The game is set in the Wizarding World and based on the Harry Potter novels written by J.K. Rowling.
The game was released for Android and iOS on April 25, 2018. Players praised its free-roam settings throughout Hogwarts with an underlying original plot looming in the background. There are a lot of entertaining features added in between the main story to make the game more engaging for players.
In addition to attending Hogwarts as a new student, players will fill out their character’s backstory in dialogue. The game adds an extra element of an original story to the plot, never before seen in the Harry Potter universe.
The subplot of the game revolves around the player’s character and their older sibling who was expelled from Hogwarts years before the player’s arrival. This brings shame to the family name of the player’s house and is a plot point that is brought up several times throughout the course of the story.
The originality of the story, combined with the small choices players are allowed to make, do help the story stand out as compared to all of the other Harry Potter games and movies. Becoming a part of the Wizarding World, allowing the player’s character to actually attend classes and visiting iconic locations only spoken of in passing in the books and movies makes this game stand out from the rest.
Also unlike the other Harry Potter games, Hogwarts Mystery is entirely free-to-play. Although the game is plagued with microtransactions that might affect a player’s enjoyment of the game, none of that is a deterrent to the story and the very original plot can be enjoyed by everyone equally!
