Octopath Traveler, the retro-inspired JRPG developed by Acquire, managed to become rather successful worldwide, a success that prompted Square Enix not only to port the game from Nintendo Switch to PC, but also to start developing another entry in the series, Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent, set to release on iOS and Android. The game was scheduled for a 2019 release in Japan, but it seems like this won’t be happening.
Producer Yuuki Yokoyama recently confirmed that Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent will be released sometime during 2020. Development is almost done, but the production schedule is being changed so that post-launch support can be offered without delay, which makes sense for a mobile title.
Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent will not be too different from the original game. As a prequel, players will take control of the main protagonist who has to fight an evil force that is set on destroying the world. The chosen one will be accompanied by three other characters, who will also star in their own individual stories.
Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent will feature an expanded battle system, which will allow players to bring eight characters into battle, tweaked controls and the return of the excellent Job System which allows a lot of flexibility for customization.
Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent launches in Japan sometime next year. A Western release has yet to be dated.
