Cobalion, one of the fabled Pokémon belonging to the Swords of Justice, is here in Pokémon Go! The stalwart lion brings fearsome moves with it thanks to its dual-type Steel and Fighting status, and battling it can be an uphill battle if you’re not thoroughly prepared. Today, we’ll show you how to deal with Cobalion in our Pokémon Go Cobalion raid guide on weaknesses and counters!
Cobalion Weaknesses and Counters
Cobalion is a legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Go. This mighty Pokémon is one of the members of the Swords of Justice, the legendary trio from Unova. Cobalion is a dual-type Steel and Fighting Pokémon, giving him unique type matchups.
Weaknesses (160% damage) | Resistances (62% damage) | Super Resistances (39% damage) |
---|---|---|
Fighting | Dark | Bug |
Fire | Dragon | Poison |
Ground | Grass | Rock |
Ice | ||
Normal | ||
Steel |
As you can see, Cobalion’s Steel and Fighting dual-type gives it a lot of resistances to several types. Don’t even try attacking it with Bug, Poison, or Rock moves, as it will take very little damage from those types.
Though Cobalion is both Steel and Fighting, one of its weaknesses is Fighting moves due to its Steel type. Your best bet against Cobalion is to bring a Pokémon that knows Fighting, Fire, or Ground type moves. Here’s a list of Pokémon that know good moves to use against Cobalion.
Chandelure is a great starting counter for Cobalion thanks to its Ghost and Fire typing. If Cobalion tries to use any Steel or Fighting moves against Chandelure, they will be rendered ineffective. Chandelure also learns a lot of Fire moves like Incinerate and Overheat, making it a premier choice against Cobalion.

Darmanitan is another great Pokémon to use against Cobalion. Darmanitan also learns moves like Incinerate and Overheat, but it can also utilize Focus Blast as well. The one thing you need to keep in mind is that Darmanitan’s overall defense is somewhat low, so you’ll need to be careful while it’s in play.
If you’ve got Mega Energy saved up, Mega Charizard Y is a fantastic pick against Cobalion. Mega Charizard Y’s combat stats are through the roof with phenomenal attack and defense, and it’s resistant against Steel and Fighting moves. Out of the ten moves Mega Charizard Y can learn, six of them are Fire type, so you should have no trouble building a good moveset against Cobalion.
These are our top three picks to counter Cobalion, but it’s okay if you don’t have them. The following Pokémon are great picks to use as well:
- Blaziken
- Groudon
- Heatran
- Flareon
- Typhlosion
- Arcanine
Basically, any of your favorite Pokémon that have access to Fire, Ground, or Fighting moves should be able to do the trick, assuming they’re appropriately strengthened enough.
