Shadowrun Returns is a beautiful role playing game that can be quite complex at times thanks to its many systems which aren’t really explained during the course of the game. Role Playing Game veterans surely will not have any problems understanding most of them, that’s for sure, but if you have decided to enter this unique world made of numbers, stats, items and so on for the first time, you may need some help in understanding every game system. Full understanding of the game’s system is what will make you enjoy this wonderful role playing game more.
1 – Character Creation
While creating a character is entirely up to you and there are no real wrong ways to do it, you may want to pick your etiquette carefully. I found that picking something that broadens your possibilities is a good way to go. Even when you want your character to have a specific behavior, it’s always better to keep more broader options, especially if you’re playing the game for the very first time.
2 – Character Stats
Powering up your stats will be essential in being able to fight the toughest enemies and complete the game. While the game is not too hard and can be completed by pretty much any character build, players new to the genre may find so much freedom in customization confusing. The five stats are Strength, Quickness, Intelligence, Willpower, Charisma and Body, and all of them are pretty much essential to your survival. As you may still be learning how the game works, you will probably want to stay alive for longer, improving Body. If you want to take out enemies as quickly as you can, you can improve Strength and Quickness. Intelligence powers up your special attacks so that’s quite important as well. A well balanced build will make your life easier the first time through the game.
3 – Battle Tips
The Battle System of Shadowrun Returns gives a variety of viable options in battle. While staying on the offensive all the time may seem well and good, you may end up dead before you realize it. Considering that you start battles with two turns, use the first one to plan ahead and find cover. Staying out in the open will get you killed if you’re fighting a stronger enemy. One more thing you should always be careful about are both your equipment and items. The first is pretty self- explanatory: make sure to always have the best weapons available at a given time. Once you start developing your character, your combat options will also expand with multiple skills, but the basis of your offense should always be your primary weapon. Good item management is also a must in this game, considering how specific items may be the only thing standing between you and death.
