Skul: The Hero Slayer Tips and Tricks

Skul: The Hero Slayer is a roguelike action game, and as such it’s quite the challenging experience. Your reflexes and skills will be tested as you fight against the human armies that have taken over the underworld. We’ll help you along your journey with our Skul: The Hero Slayer tips and tricks guide!

Check your surroundings and utilize the environment!

As you’re fighting through the levels, keep an eye out for anything that might be handy. Sometimes you’ll come across barrels with bomb icons on them, which will explode upon any damage. You can lure a bunch of enemies nearby and set the bombs off to take them out easily.

You can also lure enemies to walk into environmental hazards, like spike traps or the plants that shoot bullets out in the first area. Basically, just about anything that can hurt you can also hurt enemies!

Occasionally, you’ll come across strange statues that are breakable. Destroying these statues will grant you a temporary buff or restore your HP, so make sure to break them whenever you come across one.

Learn what the door frames mean!

You’ll notice quickly that the doors that open up at the end of each area have special designs on them. These designs are supposed to tell you what you’ll find on the other side of the door, so learning and memorizing them is the key to success.

For example, let’s say you’re on the hunt for more Bone Fragments. You’ll notice that the doors with a bunch of skulls and bones around them lead you to new Skulls, so you’ll be choosing those most of the time.

Swap often and use all of your abilities!

Each Skull has a “swap-in” ability that activates automatically upon switching to the Skull. Your cooldowns on both Skulls will also continue to run even when you’re not actively using the Skull. You are encouraged to constantly switch between your two Skulls to get the most out of your abilities, and you should do so!

Once you swap to your secondary Skull, you’ll have to wait a few seconds to swap back. This should be enough time to use all of your skills, get in some damage, swap back, rinse and repeat. This is the most optimal flow to combat, and getting in the habit of using all of your skills will make you very effective at taking down bad guys.

Additionally, you can even reduce the swap cooldown by upgrading Skul back at the Demon Lord’s castle, to make this an even more effective strategy.

Destroy old Skulls and upgrade your favorite Skulls!

Skul can only have two Skulls at any given time. If you find another one, you’ll have to either replace one of your old Skulls or destroy it. Destroying a Skull will break it down into valuable Bone Fragments, which can be spent on upgrading a Skull to the next rarity.

There are four rarities: common, rare, unique, and legendary. The rarer the Skull, the more Bone Fragments you’ll need. You can do this whenever you beat a boss or mini-boss and meet up with Arachne, the spider queen.

When a Skull’s rarity is upgraded, its appearance will change and skills become stronger. Unfortunately, this process is NOT permanent, and your Skulls will revert to their base rarities at the end of your run. You will also lose all of your Bone Fragments once a run is over, so make sure to spend them as you see fit—there’s no reason to hang onto them.

Rescue the NPCs!

The game may seem hard and overwhelming at first, but you’ll get further and further with every run. To help you along the way, you’ll meet various NPCs who will set up shop in the Demon Lord’s tower to give you a boost. Some NPCs will give you Skulls and items right off the bat, so they’re very helpful.

Throughout your adventures, you’ll come across NPCs who are trapped in cages. Break the cages by attacking them a lot, and then free the NPCs. Eventually, you’ll fill up the whole main hall of the tower.

Some NPCs won’t go back to the tower, but instead they’ll help you on the spot. One NPC in particular will give you a boost to your stats or restore your HP, so they’re always worth rescuing.
