Fortnite emotes are used to congratulate, mock, and just plain fool around while you play. There are traversal emotes which allow you to move as you emote, quick gestures to communicate to another player, and some of the best, and most, popular emotes: the dance moves. Dances in Fortnite are usually inspired by pop culture such as TV and movies and popular song, with some coming from collaborations with musical artists or gaming streamers. While there are new emotes released all the time, players have their firm favourites, many of which have stood the test of time and remain popular years after their release. Check out below what we believe are the top ten most popular dances in Fortnite right now.
Top 10 Fortnite Dance Moves
When you enter a lobby you will see many players performing their favourite emotes before the match starts. Some will show off the latest dance moves available in the Item Shop, while others will have classic emotes from many chapters ago.. Here are the dance emotes we have found are the most popular in Fortnite today. Let us know if you think another emote should have made the list by leaving us a comment below!
10. Zany Dance Emote
Zany entered the Item Shop in season 4 and is said to be inspired by a strange internet alien dancing to ‘Dame Tu Cosita’ by El Chombo. The alien dances along to a remix of the song and soon went viral. Clearly someone at Epic Games saw the funky moves, and thought a dance move inspired by it would make a great addition to the Fortnite dance move collection.
9. LLama Bell Dance Emote
Llama Bell first appeared in the Item Shop in season 5. The dance was taken straight from a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Christopher Walken acting as a music producer who demands more cowbell on the track the band is recording. Will Ferrell is playing the cowbell and begins to play it more manically- inspiring the emote we see today.
8. Hype Dance Emote
Hype was first seen in the season 4 Battlepass. The moves were taken from a music video by BlocBoy JB for his track ‘Shoot’. The video went viral and Epic Games jumped on it and quickly put it into the game. BlocBoy JB actually sued Epic for taking his moves without permission!
7. Dance Moves Dance Emote
Dance moves is the OG of emotes, first introduced in season 1 and given to every player when they first start the game. It was taken from the TV show Scrubs in an episode where Turk is showing off his moves to try and join the hospital band.
6. The Floss Dance Emote
The Floss was a season 2 dance emote given as a reward, and is pretty rare but still very popular to use. It arrived in game thanks to a boy dubbed ‘Backpack Kid’ who made the dance go viral, more so when he appeared during Katy Perry’s number on Saturday Night Live. It inspired another similar dance move on Fortnite- the Windmill Floss which still appears in the Item Shop from time to time.
5. Groove Jam Dance Emote
Groove Jam came to the Item Shop in season 4 and was lifted straight from the 2004 movie Napoleon Dynamite. Napoleon Dynamite dances in front of the school to Canned Heat by Jamiroquai in an attempt to help his friend become class president, and Epic Games just had to have it as an emote.
4. Best Mates Dance Emote
This season 3 emote was directly inspired by a viral video by Marlon Webb. In ‘Band of the Bold’, some friends are doing these moves as they meet up in the street and then jog along to Take On Me by A-Ha. Perfectly bizarre and now the best way to make friends in Fortnite.
3. Flapper Dance Emote
Straight out of the roaring ’20s this emote was an instant hit with fans. Inspired by 1923 show ‘Runnin’ Wild’, the happy-go-lucky and cheerful dance move is taken directly from the Charleston dance of the early 20th century. Since it is now the ’20s again, maybe it is time to bring this type of fun-loving dance back?
2. Orange Justice Dance Emote
Orange Justice is another season 4 dance move popular with players. Epic Games announced the winners of their Boogie Down contest in which fans designed dance moves to create a new emote, but Orange Shirt Kid was no where to be seen. Fans were outraged and demanded justice- and Epic Games listened! The dance was introduced into the season 4 Battlepass as a reward and Orange Justice was served.
1. Fresh Dance Emote
As we all know, Epic Games loves a good pop culture reference, and this emote shows just how much the fans love it too. The Fresh emote is taken from Carlton’s dance moves in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, when he boogies down to It’s Not Unusual by Welsh crooner Tom Jones. The moves are so iconic that the actor who plays him, Alfonso Ribeiro, used the moves in his appearance on Dancing With the Stars! It was rumoured to have sparked another lawsuit which was soon dropped, thankfully.
We hope you enjoyed that list of the most popular dance moves in Fortnite! There are so many dance move emotes, many of which are taken from TikTok dances popular very recently, but have not yet stood the test of time. We shall see in a year or so whether they remain as popular as they are today.
