When it comes to modern mobile games, it appears that a constant internet connection is always a must. However, you sometimes want to play games offline for various reasons. And for those moments, we have the solution for you: a list of the best offline iOS games you can play without WiFi in 2020.
Usually, it’s the premium games (those you have to pay for) that give you the option to play without an internet connection, because they don’t need to rely on microtransactions or ads in order to generate revenue. However, not even all premium games can be played offline… while some amazing free ones can.
Either way, we have done some digging and checked tons of games available on the App Store today and we’re ready to share our findings with you below. So let’s not waste any second and instead let’s check out below the 20 best iPhone and iPad games you can play offline / without Internet, in no particular order.
Walking Dead: The Game
The original Walking Dead Game created by Telltale has been out for a while now and fortunately a bunch of sequels followed. An adventure game like no other, challenging you to make quick, difficult decisions on the go and constantly keeping tension to the highest possible levels. Amazing writing and brilliant gameplay – that’s what you’re getting from the Walking Dead: The Game, created by the soon-to be defunct Telltale Games.
You can download it on the App Store for free (first episode). Then you should definitely move to the next titles in the franchise: Walking Dead: The Game Season 2, Walking Dead: Michonne and Walking Dead: A New Frontier.
Also, if you don’t really think that zombies are your main thing, you can also play any of the adventure games created by Telltale. They have Batman, Game of Thrones and much more. All of them playable offline and absolutely amazing!
Pocket Build
An open world city building game that gives you complete freedom on what to do, what to build and how to do it. It’s a truly relaxing experience that allows you to get creative… but doesn’t offer much else, such as actual gameplay – no goals, no rules, just some very basic mechanics, beautiful graphics and a world to create exactly as you want to.
For some, this is pure heaven. I personally love it – especially since the game gets updated constantly and new amazing features are added. Relaxing and fun, with the added bonus of being available online. Perfect, in other words!
If this sounds like something you’d enjoy playing, give it a try right now.
Monument Valley 2
Although this game has been out for a while, it still tops the charts and remains an absolute gem. It can be played offline – and if you haven’t tried it yet, you must do so, especially if you’re into puzzle games played in an isometric view.
Guide a mother and her child as they embark on a journey through magical architecture, discovering illusionary pathways and delightful puzzles as you learn the secrets of the Sacred Geometry.
You can download the game on the App Store right now and if you want to dig even deeper, you can also get the original – Monument Valley 1.
Minecraft
I don’t think that this game needs any introduction. Everybody must’ve heard of it and its popularity is based on facts: Minecraft is an amazing, addictive game that will keep you busy for hours. Days. Weeks. Months. You get the idea!
Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles. Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs.
If you haven’t played the game already, it’s time to do so and see why everybody loves it. Download it from the App Store today!
Angry Birds 2
Another game that requires no introduction. This is one of the most popular franchises out there and many people still find it surprising that you can actually play the game offline. But you do and you should take advantage of this. Old or young, this little game (with many levels) will get you hooked instantly.
You can join the action right away by downloading the game on the App Store.
Battleheart 2
We’re going strong with the RPGs still, with a really beautiful game that takes all the mechanics that you love from free to play RPGs and turns them into a premium experience.
In this game, you’ll take command of a party of heroes and slay hordes of monsters in frantic, real time battles that will put your reflexes to the test. Lots of things to do, loot to collect and opportunities to have fun, all in one place. So definitely give this a try if you’re into RPGs – download it from the App Store.
The Escapists
A prison escape game like no other, this is a little gem of a game that you will fall in love with instantly! It gives you complete freedom when it comes to choosing your methods of escaping the prison. Craft, build, steal or brawl – it’s up for you to decide what’s the route you want to follow.
Learn routines of the guards, work together with other prisoners and always be on top of things. A huge level of challenge, as well as reply values and various prisons to escape from – all with its unique design and Pros / Cons. So if you’re up for a game that’s slightly different than the rest, but extremely fun to play, this is a perfect choice!
You can download The Escapist on the App Store here.
Farming Simulator 20
Although this does sound like a bad idea for a game – and something you would never enjoy playing, trust me that you will! It is absolutely addictive and even though simple in concept, it’s brilliant in execution and will become your new favorite. And this comes from somebody who was 100% sure that he would hate it!
Immerse yourself in a huge open world and harvest many types of crops, take care of your livestock – cows, sheep, and pigs – take part in forestry, and sell your products on a dynamic market to expand your farm! The game looks good, plays good, IS good! So wait no more and go get it from the App Store.
Terraria
This is a game that, in my opinion, shouldn’t work! It mixes styles that shouldn’t work together: 2D visuals, crafting, exploration, and combat… but somehow they blend in so well that you can’t help but fall in love with this unique game that has been often copied but never matched.
In Terraria, every world is unique – from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and battle villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas and action-packed, sandbox adventures are just a pickaxe swing away!
Check out this game on the App Store right now.
Goblin Sword
I’m not the biggest platformer fan out there, but there are some nice options available on mobile and Goblin Sword is one of them.
A retro platformer optimized for your iPhone or iPad, Goblin Sword also has a bit of RPG elements when it comes to character development and a lot of style. Slay as many monsters as you can, collect loot, avoid dangerous traps and defeat hard to beat bosses in this cool game! Download it here.
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
There are various games from the Final Fantasy franchise available on the App Store, but my favorite by far is FFT: War of the Lions. Probably nostalgia plays a big role here (since the original game was launched way back in 1997, and upgraded with new features in 2007), but I’m still sure that even new players would absolutely fall in love with the minimalistic, retro graphics and everything the game has to offer.
The saga continues and if you are a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, you need to have a FF game installed on your device – one that you can enjoy offline. And this one is our recommendations.
So head over to the App Store and download it right away!
Limbo
The game’s description on the App Store sums up the best what you can expect from this awesome game: Limbo is a gripping blend of stark, haunting landscapes, bizarre characters, and unsettling sounds.
With clever puzzle design, an intriguing narrative, and an excellent touch-screen control system, it’s as rewarding to play as it is interesting to look at and listen to.
More than just a simple game – a complete experience, Limbo can be downloaded on the App Store.
Pocket Mortys
A game that involves collecting Mortys, training them and sending them to battle? It sounds too good to be true, but Adult Swim Games made sure that it’s not. This game exists and it’s absolutely awesome. It’s never too late to start collecting them all!
There are over 150 Mortys available in the game, the visuals and overall style of Pocket Mortys is true to the series that everybody loves and, even better, once you get to a place with internet connection, you can go online and battle others for supremacy. A great game to play, no matter if you have 5 or 50 minutes available.
Available for download here. Then make sure to check out our guide for the game as well.
Plague Inc
Plague Inc is already a classic and you have to try it if you haven’t done so already. The game challenges you to destroy the human race by developing the deadliest disease ever. Sounds scary and it is, but fortunately it’s also really fun to play!
A mixture of strategy and simulation, Plague Inc doesn’t offer a lot in terms of visuals, but don’t let its apparent simplicity fool you: this game is complex and extremely challenging. After all, the human race is known for its will to survive!
Check out the game on the App Store today. As a bonus, if you want something similar – yet different enough to be exciting – Rebel Inc has been launched by the same developer and we loved it a lot!
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
The iconic game series has made its way to mobile and even though we’re getting the much older releases, they are still the titles that wrote gaming history.
You can download a multitude of GTA games – like GTA 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I decided to recommend the latter simply because it was the game that really kept me busy back in the days and, therefore, one of my favorite GTA titles of all time. But they’re all basically following the same route, so you can pick either or all of them for hours of fun.
Get Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the App Store right away and re-live the great moments this game offers.
Stardew Valley
If you haven’t played this game already, do yourself a favor and play it now! This one’s been available on PC for a while – and on iOS as well, but it’s an evergreen hit. Relaxing and amazing, this is one of the best games ever! No doubt about that.
In this game, you move to the countryside and start a brand new life there, handling farming, interacting with the villagers, discovering treasures and fighting monsters. You are actually free to do whatever you want and play the game at your own pace, with your own rules. And you’ll have a ton of fun doing it!
You can get the game from the App Store here.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
An amazing classic made its way to iPhone and iPad – although I do recommend playing it on the latter as the larger screen does help a lot.
Build your civilization from a wandering tribe to a superpower of the future, taking advantage of all the goodies that Civilization 6 offers on other platforms. A surprisingly good game that can be tried for free for the first 60 turns on iOS, then upgraded to the full game.
A perfect strategy title that will keep you busy for hours and will probably never get old (this comes from somebody who still occasionally plays Civ 3, which was launched back in 2001!)
You can try the game here.
Badland 1 & 2
The insanely difficult yet extremely fun and rewarding Badland series has been with us since 2013, when the original game was launched. If you haven’t played it, it still remains relevant even today – but you can jump straight into the sequel which is equally delightful.
Whirring blades, crushing boulders and all sorts of other dangers lurk around as you fly, roll and try to stay alive in this super platformer for mobile with lots of puzzles and even more personality.
You can download the first game in the series on the App Store now, then try Badland 2 as well.
Donut County
A really casual game that is simple enough for kids to love as well, works really nice for adults too. It couldn’t be otherwise when you are controlling a hole that has to swallow up everything around it?
The game is deceptively simple, but there are actually puzzles to solve as you play the game, since not all items will fit into the hole instantly, while others will be a bit more difficult to reach. But in the end, you’ll figure it out and be happy about it!
Religion inc.
A really unique game – and a well done one also! – which challenges you to create your own religion and try to make it the most popular one on the planet, surviving the tests of time. A kind of a Plague Inc, but on a less deadlier scale.
While this is a deep strategic game with little actual action, it’s not really a game for everybody to enjoy, but if you are at least intrigued by its concept, you will most likely love it. And a 99 cents, it doesn’t require a huge investment either. Our take? You’ll love it, as you’ll love feeling like a God, creating your own religion!
