Wordle Top Tips and Tricks

1. Eliminate as many letters as you can!

Wordle gives you six guesses to find the correct word of the day. Every time you make a guess, the game will tell you if the letters you put down are in the word at all, and if they’re in the correct spots. At the start of every Wordle session, your main goal is to eliminate as many letters as you can.

A good approach to this is to try to get rid of vowels, as those are the most common letters. For your first two or three guesses, do not repeat any letters and fit as many vowels in as you can. Some good starting words include:

  • Raise
  • Roast
  • Tears
  • Rites
  • Dance
  • Roate
  • Soare
  • Stare
  • Arise

Some direhard Wordle fans calculated the math on these words, and these words include some of the most common letters found in the dictionary.

2. Always try new letters!

Once you input a word, the letters will turn green if it’s in the correct spot or yellow if it’s in the word but not in the correct spot. For your first couple of guesses, you’re probably going to have lots of gray spots, with some yellow and green here and there. From here, your goal is to try words with new letters, unless you’re absolutely sure that the word has repeat letters in it.

It’s very important to find the correct spots for yellow letters. Always move them around between guesses until you find the right spot for them, keeping repeating letters in mind.

If you feel like you’re stuck, and you can’t guess any more words with the letters you have left, try brainstorming! Write down what you have on a separate document or physical piece of paper so that you don’t waste your remaining guesses, then just start filling in random letters. You never know what words will pop into your head.

3. Look up a word database!

If you’ve hit a brick wall and cannot think of anything else to keep going, you can always look up a dictionary or word list for some assistance. Whether this is considered cheating or not is entirely up to you, so do this at your own discretion!

You can try out websites like Best Word List for lists of five-letter words. You can even narrow it down to include certain letters in specific spots, if you need a lot of help.
