There are many different materials to discover in Minecraft, many of which can be found in clusters underground, in caves, or cliffs. One of the rock types that can be mined to craft into various items is the Amethyst Shard. This rock type was added during the Caves & Cliffs update that was first announced in 2020.
Amethyst Geodes are found between the bedrock and Y=70, although occasionally they break the surface on beaches too.
Fully-grown Amethyst Clusters can be found on geodes and, when mined using a non-Silk Touch pickaxe made from Iron, Diamond, or Netherite, it will drop 4 Amethyst Shards. Any other pickaxe will drop 2 shards. If Silk-Touch enchantment is used, mining will make the cluster only drop more clusters.
When using a pickaxe with the Fortune enchantment, you can greatly increase the number of Amethyst Shards dropped by the cluster:
- Fortune I gives 33% chance of dropping 8 shards
- Fortune II gives 25% chance of dropping 8-12 shards
- Fortune III gives a 20% chance of dropping 8-16 shards
You can use Amethyst Shards to craft the following items:
Happy mining!
