If you want to ride those waves like a pro, our True Surf tips and cheats will come in handy. Level up faster, impress the judges and unlock more boards in this impressive surfing simulation game for mobile.
Now, I’ll be honest with you: I’ve never surfed in the real world. Ever. I imagined it to be difficult, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so incredibly difficult – especially in a game.
But True Surf wants to deliver a unique experience and realistic simulation, so I’m guessing that the insane difficulty level is part of the deal. I mean, I even had trouble completing the tutorial! Who knew virtual surfing is that difficult?
But I never let any challenge destroy me! I managed to master the game eventually and I am now here to help you do the same. So let’s not waste a second – there are some True Surf tips and cheats waiting for you in our strategy guide below.
1. Find the right spot to deploy
Don’t just jump into the beautiful water that True Surf delivers! Choose the perfect spot, by looking at the waves and tapping the button at the perfect time to get a head start.
Choose waves that are farther away from the shore and don’t forget that you can control the camera to look for that perfect wave: simply tap and hold the left & right arrows before tapping the wave! And never choose the closest wave – pick the one behind it to have more time to surf!
2. Ride the wave & perform tricks
The main thing that you want to do is perform as many tricks, as often as possible, in order to increase the XP points that you get when the surfing’s over.
Since this game is described as the “world’s most authentic surfing game” and it focuses on realism, it means that everything’s insanely difficult to do.
Master the controls first and make sure you know how to keep your character afloat, then start performing some tricks. Riding the wave for longer increases your judge ratings (the ones you get at the end of the round), but they don’t influence XP gains that much. Instead, you should perform dangerous actions often.
The easiest thing to do is to go on top on the wave and stay there for as long as possible. Twists and turns are also useful, but difficult to master.
My recommendation is to focus on a type of trick and practice it a lot until you can pull it off in most occasions, then move to another.
3. Get some Air time
Getting some air time and performing a 360 gives you a ton of XP points and judge appreciation, but it’s also the most difficult thing to do. This is the supreme trick that you have to master.
The good news is that, even if you can’t really pull it off, you will still get a reward of some sort since you will still be able to pull off a move. So it won’t be all lost, and you should keep trying.
But if you really want to master the jumps and get perfect Air time, you can check out the video below, showing you exactly how to do it. And, yes, it’s even more difficult than it looks like!
4. Choose your favorite surfing location
The nice thing about True Surf is that it allows you to choose your surfing location based on real life surfing havens. It also draws weather conditions automatically, so you will always get the waves that you would if you were to visit your virtual surfing spot in person.
This means that if you have a favorite spot for surfing – or if there was one you really wanted to try out, you can now do so through this game. Pretty awesome!
And if you don’t have a favorite spot, when choosing location make sure to sort the list based on “Good” or “Perfect” surfing locations – this means that the waves are better there and you’ll be able to score higher points.
5. Focus on leveling up
Your main goal after starting to play is to gain enough XP to level up as fast as possible.
Leveling up is important because it unlocks the location selection in the game (at level 4), rewards you with tons of Shells (premium currency) each time you level up and gives you access to new and better surfing boards. Therefore, make it your priority to get to level 10 ASAP.
6. What type of board to choose
You need to spend some serious money in order to get the better surfing boards in this game, and unless you want to pay real money, you have to do some planning.
The easiest way to do it is to take a look at the available boards – after unlocking several. I recommend waiting at least until level 7, but it’s best to wait until level 10 to have more options. Don’t spend the Shells you have received until then and invest them in purchasing your favorite board.
There are various boards available in the game (funboards, longboards, shortboards and so on). They each have their own advantages and disadvantages, so make sure that you check them all out and look at their stats.
Important stats are speed (you need solid speed to pull off air jumps) and carving, since that basically increases the control you have over the board.
7. Practice makes perfect
There are few games where this saying goes better than in True Surf for iPhone or iPad (and hopefully for Android devices soon). This game is extremely difficult and you need to practice a lot in order to become a true master.
So don’t give up – I nearly did this after failing for like 20 times in a row. Learn from your mistake, give the game a chance and take things one at a time.
You will start to see results eventually and when you first pull that first perfect 360 degree flip, you’ll be extremely satisfied. You’ll get there!
This would be all that you need to become a virtual surfer in True Surf. If you have additional advice to share with fellow players, don’t hesitate to let us all know by sharing your comments below!
