What Do Soft Caps Do in Elden Ring on Steam Deck

FromSoftware has released the highly anticipated Elden Ring to many platforms and even Steam Deck. This game will most likely be the benchmark for future Souls games, as it is simply incredible. The developers took the already proven features of their previous games and added cool new ones, one of which is the exploration of the open world. But it’s still an action RPG, and in this guide, we’re going to tell you about Soft Caps.

What Do Soft Caps Do?

In Elden Ring, you can level up your character by increasing various stats. There are eight in total:

  • Endurance
  • Mind
  • Vigor
  • Intelligence
  • Dexterity
  • Strength
  • Arcane
  • Faith

In all RPGs, there are concepts of Hard Caps and Soft Caps that relate to stats. Hard Caps means the maximum above which you cannot increase a certain stat. In the case of Elden Ring, any stat cannot be higher than 99.

As for Soft Caps, this is the threshold where you can still increase the stat, but this is not desirable. In such games, stats do not increase equally all the time. At some point, stats will start to lose their effectiveness as you level up. It is worth paying attention to if you want to effectively use Runes to create your build.

Let’s look at the example of Vigor. Increasing this stat gives you an increase in your health, but at a certain stage, the increase will become less effective. Also, unlike Hard Caps, which are always the same, Soft Caps for each stat can be different, and there can be several of them for one stat.
