Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is full of fascinating characters and magical, and sometimes dangerous, animals. One of these strange creatures is an Ashwinder, whose name derives from the ashes in a fire and the twisting way a snake moves. An Ashwinder is a serpent created within the embers of an unchecked magical fire, and can be recognized by its pale grey skin and red eyes.
Ashwinders live for an hour, just long enough to find a dark area to lay their eggs before they die. Their eggs are red and burning hot and cannot be picked up by hand, so they have to be frozen before they can be used. Wizards and witches use the frozen Ashwinder eggs in love spells, in creating Liquid Luck potions, and they can also be eaten whole as a cure for a fever-inducing illness ague. Players can find Ashwinder eggs by completing the side quest Cold As Ice. This side quest unlocks when you reach Year 6 Chapter 32.
How to Get Ashwinder Eggs for the Cold As Ice Side Quest
The Cold As Ice side quest involves helping Hagrid with a creature problem. You must complete the side quest to find the Ashwinder eggs, but first you must learn all about the magical serpent. Start with a visit to Hagrid in his hut, which is found within the Castle Grounds.
When you visit him in his hut, Hagrid tells you about accidentally creating an Ashwinder when he fell asleep and let a magical fire burn unattended in his hut. He thinks the serpent could have escaped into the school, so you must help him locate it. The first part of the side quest gives you 1 hour to learn about Ashwinders from Hagrid. Earning 3 Stars allows you to pass, 5 Stars earns you a Chocolate Frog.
Next, Hagrid tells you that the Ashwinders lay their eggs in secluded areas, and that they only live for an hour and collapse into dust once they have laid the eggs. You also find out that the eggs do not hatch, but they actually get red-hot and can cause serious damage! Hagrid suggests you befriend an Ashwinder to help you track down the lost one. You must bond with one of these magical snakes before you can do any more with the side quest.
Head to the Kitchens for the next part of the side quest. Talk to Hagrid in the Kitchens. You both notice that the Ashwinder you have befriended is looking at the cauldrons, so go to investigate. The lost Ashwinder appears but soon collapses into a pile of dust, which means only one thing—it has already laid its eggs!
The next part of the side quest requires you to search the kitchens with Hagrid. This quest gives you 3 hours and you pass if you get 3 Stars, and a Chocolate Frog if you get 5 Stars. Once this is done, and you don’t find any eggs, you have to visit someone who could help—Professor Kettleburn. He does not like Ashwinders after having a bad experience in the past, which he tells you about, but you must get him to help you. You are given 3 hours to convince the Professor to help locate the snake. Earning 3 Stars for this task allows you to pass, and 5 Stars earns you a Chocolate Frog.
The Professor tells you the Ashwinders prefer “cold, dark, isolated” areas, so you have to go and look in the Slytherin Common Room. Speak to Barnaby in the Slytherin Common Room, who agrees to help you look. You discover the eggs behind the bookshelf and decide to use a freezing charm to cool them down.
To freeze the red hot Ashwinder eggs, you must first learnt the Glacius spell from Professor Flitwick, who can be found in the Charms Classroom in the East Towers. You are given 1 hour to complete this side quest task, with 3 Stars allowing you to pass the task and 5 Stars earning you a Chocolate Frog. Before you go, Professor Flitwick asks you to practice the freezing spell on Barnaby! You then both head back to the Slytherin Common Room to freeze the Ashwinder eggs using the Glacius spell.
Professor Kettleburn is there, and once the eggs are frozen using the spell, you have to help him connect with the Ashwinder. You finally manage to change the Professor’s mind about the magical serpent, and he decides the magical serpents are not so bad after all.
Next, head back to Care of Magical Creatures and discuss what to do with the frozen eggs with Hagrid and Professor Kettleburn. You finally decide to donate them to St Mungo’s, who can use them as an antidote to ague.
Once that final task is done, you have completed the 10-part side quest Cold As Ice and are rewarded with XP for you and Hagrid! This is a pretty long side quest, with 10 tasks to complete to pass the whole thing, plus the time taken to bond with an Ashwinder, so make sure you have plenty of resources before you begin.
Good luck!
