The Metal Coat is a very useful item in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Besides being an important evolution tool, it can increase the power of steel type Pokemon when held. Getting it can be tricky, but its value will certainly outweigh the work. To get it, here’s what to do.
How To Use The Metal Coat
The Metal Coat evolves two very specific Pokemon. It can turn an Onix into the ground and steel type Steelix, or Scyther into the bug and steel type Scizor. To evolve either, you need to have them hold the Metal Coat and then formally trade them to someone. Be sure to do this with a friend so that you can get it back. The person you are trading with will need a copy of either game and a Nintendo Switch online subscription.
How To Get The Metal Coat
When it comes to this, you have two options. You can wait until you complete the main story, meaning you defeated the Elite Four, became the champion, and got the national dex. After this, you can pay a visit to Byron in his house on Iron Island, where he will give you a Metal Coat. For some, this may seem a long way away. As such, for those who do not want to wait, you have an alternative. It’s not as simple, but it can definitely work if you really want to evolve your Pokemon right away.
How To Find A Metal Coat In The Underground
In the Grand Underground, you can catch certain steel type Pokemon. These Pokemon have a chance of being found holding a Metal Coat when you catch them. However, each one has around a five percent drop rate for possessing the Metal Coat, so your odds of catching one holding it are pretty slim. It’s not impossible, but it may certainly take some time. Below are the wild Pokemon who can be found holding one:
Magnemite
Beldum
Bronzor
If you encounter an evolved version of one of these, they can also be found possibly holding a Metal Coat. The drop rates are the same no matter the form. However, it is more common to see their pre-evolved forms roaming around. Out of all three, you will mostly run into Magnemite, as Beldum is a pseudolegendary, which have a tendency to be rarer. To increase the appearance of steel types, put statues of steel type Pokemon inside your secret base. Bring some strong fire types to counter Magnemites steel typing and you’ll be all set. You’ll have a new Metal Coat before you know it, ready to use on your Pokemon of choice!
