Microsoft shook the video games industry on January 18, 2022, by announcing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard with a massive $69.7 billion deal that is the biggest in the industry to date.
While the deal will not be finalized until 2023, gamers all over the world have started wondering what will happen to the many franchises that Activision Blizzard publishes like Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Crash Bandicoot, Diablo, and Overwatch, just to name a few. Will they continue to release on all consoles, or will they become Xbox exclusives?
Among Activision Blizzard’s franchise is also Spyro the Dragon, which made its comeback recently with Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a collection that includes the first three entries in the series released on the original PlayStation. Will future entries in the series be Xbox exclusive games? Let’s find out.
Will Spyro the Dragon become an Xbox Exclusive?
At this time, no one can know for certain if Spyro the Dragon will become an Xbox exclusive series. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has just been announced, so the details still need to be worked out.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Microsoft plans to only make certain Activision Blizzard franchises exclusive to Xbox, so there is still the chance that future Spyro the Dragon games will release on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and future consoles from the Japanese manufacturers. Also, if a new entry in the series launches before the deal is finalized, and Activision Blizzard officially becomes part of Microsoft, it will surely release on all formats and not only on Xbox consoles.
Even if Spyro the Dragon ends up becoming an Xbox exclusive series, fans of the series won’t be forced to buy an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S to play future entries in the series. All of Microsoft’s published titles also release on PC, and thanks to Game Pass Cloud Gaming, all the biggest Xbox titles can also be played on iOS and Android devices. So, even if Spyro the Dragon will become an Xbox exclusive, players will have plenty of ways of enjoying future games even without owning a Microsoft console.
